Natural Pain Remedies for Children

Many people used to have family or home remedies for everything from sore throats to treating cuts. For many families, these were lost over time due to readily accessible medications. In recent years, however, people have started to return to natural solutions for minor pain for their children.

  • Sore Throat: For children older than 1, a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of lemon in warm water can do wonders. Make certain the water is not too hot, and that your child drinks it one small sip at a time. Lemon effectively dries out congestion, while honey coats the throat to sooth pain.
  • Tension: Children today carry backpacks as big as they are, and frequently suffer from anxiety. Whether it is physical or emotional tension, massage can help. In many cases, when the parent is giving a light massage, it has added emotional benefit over a stranger.
  • Headaches: Grab a small towel or a bandana and tuck a few ice cubes inside it. Wrap it around your child’s head, making certain that the cubes do not make direct contact with the skin. The coldest part should be over the forehead.
  • Stomach Pain: Fill a sock with uncooked rice and tie off the end. Microwave for about a minute. Make certain that it is warm but not hot. Rest it gently over the stomach until cold. Repeat as needed.
  • Muscle Pain: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a great solution for kids suffering from muscle pain. It feels tingly but should not be painful. These impulses confuse pain signals, preventing them from reaching the brain.
